Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife is comprised of citizens of Cape Coral and surrounding communities who want to help the areas Burrowing Owls and other wildlife thrive as the community grows.

Cape Coral is home to possibly one of the Worlds largest population of Burrowing Owls. Experts estimate that there are more than 1,000 nesting pairs in the city. In addition to being good neighbors, the owls are good for Cape Coral’s economy. Birding enthusiasts come from all over the world to view and photograph our owls. The owls have been designated a “species of special concern” by the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission. With appropriate protection and management, residents of Cape Coral can help the owls avoid becoming a “threatened species.

CCFW distributes materials for perches (free!) and shows residents how to build starter burrows on their own property. Owls that have been displaced by construction recognize these burrows and are happy to move in. The group also instructs people how to safely and properly maintain new and existing burrows, as the owls are known to abandon burrows that become overgrown.

If you see an unmarked owl nest on property that is about to be built on, please call the City of Cape Coral 574-0589 and report it.
